Sunshine Cake

I was in my Grandmother's kitchen today, and I noticed a book propped in the corner called:

"Scientific Cooking with Scientific Methods,
 Price $2.00

by Sarah E. Woodworth Craig"

.

And, as I flipped through it, noticing all the cool recipes, and phrases we
never use anymore, ads for a revolutionary water boiler,
and even some handwritten recipes, I found one that caught my eye.

Sunshine Cake
Isn't that a fantastic name for a cake?

.
Doesn't it just make you want to go:

"Woohoo! Alright, Sunshine Cake!! Let's go on a picnic!!!"

Cause that was my reaction.
Picnics are super cool by the way.
I have never actually been on a real picnic, like with a
basket, and chicken salad, and a checked table cloth.
I think that would be awesome.
It's officially on my unofficial bucket list.

We always had picnics on a picnic table, and occasionally on
an old blanket, with paper bags.
We also took Subway sandwiches to the beach once, and the ravens ate
everything that we left at the table when we all skittered to the beach
to watch eagles fish, and look in tidepools.
That was fun.

Anyway!!! Back to my recipe.
Oh! Did I mention this recipe book is from 1911?
I just did. Right. Moving on.
*homeschooled*

Sunshine Cake
10 whites of eggs
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
7 yolks of eggs
1 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 cup flour
Beat whites until frothy, add cream of tartar until stiff and dry.
Add lemon rind, fold in the sugar. Add yolks until rich and lemon colored.
Next, add the flour. Bake for forty minutes in angel food pan in a slow oven*.
Let rise the first 15 minutes of baking.

*So, I asked my grandmother what the equivalent of a slow oven would be,
and she said around 250 degrees.

Isn't that fun?! I love it. I want to make it.
I mean, I am pretty sure you can't buy a boxed mix
at WalMart like this.

My mom said, "I think it's just lemon flavored
Angel food cake."

Wrong. It is Sunshine Cake.
 And it is sunshiney.

Thanks for coming by, let me know if you try it!

More sunset crazies

WHAT?! I love the sky.
I am pretty sure the sky here was one of those things that convinced me
that I could live here, and be okay.

No joke. Living in Alaska, we saw the sky bordered by mountains,
and when it didn't look like this:

(not my pic by the way, all my AK pics are on a different computer, but this is downtown Juneau)

IT LOOKED LIKE THIS!

(Brotherhood Trail Trailhead, Mendenhall Glacier in the background.)

Although it only looked like this every so often, it seemed like it was trying to make up for all the wet.
Aaaaaanyway. Back to the topic.

When we found out we were moving here I was like- No. Way.
It was one of those things that I had always told myself that we would never ever do.
Leave Alaska? Nope. Never.
So when we were getting ready to move, I soaked up as much beauty as I could.
Because, where we were headed had no beauty....right?

Wrong.
But it took me a while to admit it. I made myself hate it here at first.
Again, I'm not kidding, I was so stubborn! I would go places with people,
especially my mom, and she would be like, "Ohhhh, it's so beautiful! Look!!"
And I would be like, "Oh yeah, no mountains, no water, no snow, just a bunch
of tall grass. Lovely. What's that-a buzzard? Gorgeous."

So, it took some time to really like it here. It really wasn't until about 4 or 5 months ago, when
we were out looking up at all the stars, (which, I hate to admit, you couldn't see much up north,
because of all the clouds that were raining. or snowing) and I was like
*newsflash* "I could live here I guess."
And guess what? It wasn't even that hard to let go of Alaska.
Not that it's gone forever, wiped off the map, never ever want to go there again,
I would jump at the chance to visit. But God sort of dropped our family here.
So here we are.

And here's the sunset I mentioned before I started rambling all over the place.

I thought it was framed so nicely by the trees =]

Moon
(just in case your were homeschooled too)

That's the moon too. And some cool clouds.
And a tree. Oh wait. Two trees.

 And that's all!
Thanks for stopping by!

Wretched TV

I love hymns.
I am pretty sure I have posted about this before.
But I found this video, and it helps explain why they are so amazing,
why they are still relevant today, after being penned, in some cases, hundreds of years ago.
I sing them for comfort, I sing them when I need the peace only God can give,
I sing them to rejoice, I sing them to praise Him. I sing them when
I pray, when I am afraid, when I am struggling. There are hymns for
everything you can imagine, hymns filled with truths from Scripture,
that can minister to you, in any part of your life.

Have a blessed Sunday!

Found it!

So, I think I really narrowed my search down.
Because I know what I want, I just need to decide how I want it.

I love the hymn "Come Thou Fount" it is one of my favorites.
It is so melodious, and the words are so applicable, and meaningful.

I just have to decide which verse.
Because I really like them all.
Mostly the first, and the third though.

I really like this:
.
OK! I LOVE THIS ONE THE BEST!!!!!!

Mounted Art: "Come Thou Fount" Hymn chalkboard 16x20.

WHAT?! It has both of my favorite verses. Perfect.
I found it here: ToSuchAsTheseDesigns

It's a winner. *highfives*

Signs

So, I was going through Etsy the other day, trying to find ideas.
Did I mention I wanted ideas?
No?!
Well, I am wanting to paint a mural in my room, but not like the boys.
Happier. and colorfuller. *homeschooled*

Here are a couple I found-what do you think?!

Family Rules Sign,Typography Word Art in Black and Whitef
This one, and the next one are from Etsy seller: The Heartwood

Driftwood Sign, Pantry Sign, Country Kitchen Decor, Blue Wall Art,.
I really like this, just because. Not for my room.
This seller also has a really cute one that says,
"Darling, will you make me pancakes?"
And it makes me think of Jack Johnson.
But. I would also not paint that on my room wall.
Bible Verse Numbers 6:24-26 Distressed wood sign great gift.
I like this one too, all the different texts are neat. It is from New2OldSigns

Keep Calm and Pretend You're at the Beach Distressed Wood Sign, Great for Beach.
I like this a lot too, mostly for the color. But my room pretty much is this color so.....
moving on.
This one is from New2OldSigns as well by the way.

Retro Typography Poster Digital Art Print Happy and I Know It - Sarcastic Modern Retro Poster Autumn Colors Brown Cream.
Ok. this one is just funny. Not something I would really want on my wall either though.
I'm getting desperate for ideas. Why do people drink so much tea?
All I can find are signs that are excited about tea!
It tastes like.....weird.
Unless it has sugar.
Regular, herbal tea tastes like....grass water.
No joke.

Well, what do you think? Do you like any of them?

Moon, and the sunset

My grandmother called last night and said that the sunset was supposed to be purple, and
could I snap some pics? So I did :)

I was hoping for a vibrant sky (maybe it was all that play-doh that got me excited)
But it was a powder-purple, very soothing colors though.

You can barely see the moon here, but it is about 2/3 of the way up
on the left side. There was a bright star up  there too, but you can't really tell from this pic.
What? Power lines? Nope. Pretend those aren't there.
My dad said "Just go under the power lines, then you couldn't see them!"
And I said, "Ummm. No. there are snakes out there."

I like those trees. They look sort of friendly at dusk.

Anyway, that's what it looked like, if you didn't get to see it.
I hear it may be better tonight, so I may try again.

Play-doh

So, I have a question. Do I overuse exclamation points?
Okay, not really. I already know the answer to that one.

Here's the real question-Is it Play-doh, or Play-dough?

Either way, we made some of that squishy, colorful, messy, fun stuff!!

We started with the dough-it was super easy! I found the recipe on this blog
  • 3 cups flour + a little extra for kneading
  • 1/2 cups salt
  • 2 tbs. cream of tartar
  • 2 tbs. vegetable oil
  • 2 cups boiling water
Mix the first three ingredients in a large heat-proof bowl. Boil the water and oil. Slowly add the water with oil to the dry ingredients mixing well. (I often use my large stand mixer for this part... it goes faster!) Once your play dough is smooth, soft and elastic remove it from the bowl and divide it into 2 or more parts to be colored.

We decided to do four parts, because we had 4 tubes of food color.

Then I squeezed the color into the center of the dough, swirled it around a little, and passed it off to the kids!

Hooray, the orange looks so cheerful!!!!

The youngest kept insisting that hers had to stay "in a ball!!"

Two down, two to go!!

Whoopie, my hands are.....pinkpurple!

Green is almost done!

Purple is......crumpled up on the counter. So much for keeping it in a ball.

Aaaaaand done! Play-doh in action.*Also known as this is a blurry picture but we'll all pretend like it's cool*
